Professor
Terry Foley has designed an ELAC Engineering Department Web site.
The new Web site is still under construction and can be
reached at
The Engineering Web site has information about ELAC Engineering
& Technology Programs, course offerings, university 2+2
transfer, Professor biographies, and links to many other Web sites.
Professor Foley has also designed an Engineering Club Web site,
which can be located at
The Club site has information about how
to become an Engineering Club member, upcoming events, SHPE
membership and many other topics such as photographs of recent club
field trips and activities.
2000
Internships & Scholarship Awards
Summer Internship Awards went to Carmen
Frias who spent the summer working with the National Science
Foundation in Washington DC. During her stay in Washington, Carmen
had the opportunity to visit the White House Office of Science and
Technology Policy where she was given a special tour and even met
Senator Kennedy. When asked about her overall experience, Carmen
said, “it was really worth
it because the people were amazing and I learned a great deal.”
Ericka Lieberknecht was awarded the IBM New York Summer Internship. Ericka
spent the summer in New York working at IBM designing state of the
art computer chips. During her stay, Ericka was very active and
participated in many activities with IBM including sky diving and
river rafting. The Loyola Marymount Research Internship went to Martin
Leal. He spent the summer doing research on new Aluminum Alloys
for the U.S. Navy. He gained experience in working with CNC machines
and developed his leadership skills. Martin said, “I
was very proud to represent ELAC. “

CSULA
Open House
ELAC Engineering students and
their guests are invited to an open house at California State
University Los Angeles (CSULA) on Monday, November 27, 2000. The
open house will be from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. CSULA will provide busses,
that will depart from the front of East Los Angeles College at 4:40
p.m. and return at 6:50 p.m. Students
will be viewing CSULA’s “state of the art” remodeled
Engineering and Technology Building and labs. ELAC students will
receive a pizza dinner. The
many upgrades of the new $31 million facility includes:

Modern Manufacturing Tech Wing
·
New Environmental Eng. Lab
·
Expanded Electronics Comm. Lab
·
New Controls Laboratory
·
Expanded Research Facilities
·
New School Projects Lab.

Engineering
Club News
Mr.
Vincent C. Moretti, Advisor
The Engineering Club is very active and has new
officers. The new President is Martin Garibay,
Vice-Presidents Keung Wong and Alejandro
Guerra, Treasurer-William Rosales,
Secretary-Carmen Frias, Historian-Miguel Perez,
Public Relations-Nery Moreno, Web site Master-Barbara
Rodriguez, SHPE Representative-Guillermo Monay,
and Business Administrator-Luis Garcia.
The Club has many planned activities for the upcoming semester. To
join the club, attend one of the regular meetings which is held
every Thursday at noon in room G8-131.
For evening or working students, you may attend an
abbreviated club meeting every Monday night at 5:00 p.m. in room
G6-108.
On October 27-29th, 2000, 35 Engineering Club
members attended the West Coast Career Conference which was held in
Ventura, California. Students had the opportunity to visit and meet
with representatives of many companies and had great interaction.
MESA
Engineering News
Armida Avila, Director
The MESA center has
a new look with a fresh coat of paint, furniture reorganization, and
new venetian blinds. We have seven additional computers in the
lecture area for typing papers and lab reports. Alan Khuu,
our new computer technician, rebuilt and updated the computers.
Eighteen
ELAC students attended the CSULA Summer AMP (Alliance for Minorities
Participation) Program. The students received a $500 stipend and a
TI-85 calculator for attending mathematics, chemistry, or physics
workshops.
